This page will hopefully chronicle the building of the Flats Stalker 18 from Bateau.com, a plywood composite skiff intended for chasing redfish in extremely shallow water. This will be my first foray into both boat building and web pages. Wish me luck! The posts on this page will only display with the most recent at the top, so if you want to start at the beginning, scroll down to the bottom and work your way up. The archive on the right is in chronological order, however. Most of the pictures can be clicked for a larger image. Feel free to leave comments by clicking the Comments link at the bottom of each post.

Strongback

Well, it's been a couple days and I'm still not sure what to do about the strongback. I'll probably just end up ripping 6" wide strips off of a 3/4" sheet of ply and glueing them together with woodglue, making stable, straight 2x6's. I'd use these to make a framework that would just lay on top of the old strongback. The hull frames would be attached to this framework with sections of 2x4, so that each frame could be independently adjusted for square and level. This scraps the recommended method of building the boat on it's own decks, but means you don't have to have an absolutely perfect strongback to build off of. If this sounds familiar, it's because I blatantly stole it from Bayport Bob's website:

www.wetconcepts.com/FS18.htm

In fact, just use his website as a reference on how to build the boat and use mine for the witty comments from the Captain. Or to see the potential pitfalls of building the FS18.

Elie,

You're doing great. Don't follow me into the pitfalls! I'm certainly not the last word on building this design. I'm hoping someone will come forward with a better way to do it!

When I began aligning the jig system up I really regretted not going with the simple deck as the platform and strongback surface. BUT now that I've stitched the panels together I'm glad I had access to the inside of the hull for the round chine option. If I wasn't doing the round chine, then the deck as the building surface would have been the way to go.

So, since I believe you're also doing the round chine the strongback frame is probably the way to go and worth the extra setup effort. You really need access to the interior of the bow section.

Keep up the good work. - BB

After seeing your website, that was exactly my concern. Since you have to use about 350 stitches to get the strips lined up, I don't see how you could do it building on the decks. The whole idea of building on the decks has always been a little suspect to me anyway. I actually had dreams about accidentally glueing the boat to the decks, which were screwed to the strongback, and then having to saw the whole thing apart.

I need to consult the lamination schedule because after seeing your boat stitched up, I realize I have no idea how you would tape all the rounded chine together.

Your boat is looking great man, and you're making incredible progress. Thanks for the encouragement.

Elie,

Get some opinions on how to get the chine strips in place. I tried staples, but they just weren't strong enough. I thought about, but didn't try hot glue - I figured it would be too messy and wouldn't have enough holding power since the staples failed. I briefly played around with a tied down strap too. Finally, i just decided to screw the strips into the frames just so I could see what needed to be done to get them to behave. At that point I started stitching them together with the small tie wraps. This seemed the best method given the other failures. There's probably a much better way, but once I started I stuck with the zip-ties for lack of a better idea.
I'll post some more details on my site later tonight and hopefully save you some time if you decide to take this same route.

Elie,

My name is Eugene and I live in Tampa. I was hoping that I could ask you a couple of questions about your Flats Stalker build, as well as if you would be able to take a few measurements from the Hell's Bay Glades Skiff in the picture that you posted. If you have a few minutes, please shoot me an email at eugene(dot)son(at)53.com.

What you posted made a lot of sense. However, consider this, suppose you were
to write a awesome headline? I am not suggesting your
content is not solid, however what if you added a headline
that makes people desire more? I mean "Strongback" is kinda vanilla.

You should look at Yahoo's front page and note how they create post headlines to grab viewers to open the links. You might add a video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about what you've written.
Just my opinion, it would make your posts a little bit more interesting.

was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website?
I'm getting sick and tired of Wordpress because I've had problems
